Născut în Blackburn, Anglia, McShane este fiul unui fotbalist profesionist, Harry McShane şi a doamnei Irene McShane. A studiat la Royal Academy of Arts şi în prezent locuieşte cu soţia sa, Gwen Humble, la Londra şi în California.
