Steve este barman, fost marinar, cand il intalneste pe Edwin J. Bennett, cunoscut ca "profesorul" antrenor de box. "Profesorul" se convinge că Steve are ceea ce trebuie pentru a fi un boxeur de succes și il sub aripa sa.

Intr-o zi in timp ce Steve facea jogging el este aproape ucis de o masina in care se afla Belle Mercer, o renumita cantareata de cabaret. Belle era prietena interlopului Willie Ryan. Steve o cucereste pe Belle si cei doi se casatoresc. Casatoria…
