Mildred Pierce

Precizez din start ca sa nu existe discutii: nu am nici un interes financiar legat de HBO, urmaresc acest post abia de la inceputul acestui an dar apreciez faptul ca difuzeaza seriale de tinuta. Dupa "In deriva","Boardwalk Empire","The game of Thrones" si "The Borgias",in aceasta seara se pregateste sa debuteze miniseria in cinci parti "Mildred Pierce". Exista cel putin trei atuuri importante pentru care serialul merita urmarit: mai intai faptul ca filmul realizat in 1945 i-a permis lui Joan Crawford sa realizeze un rol excelent aducator de Oscar. Apoi ar fi prezenta pe generic in rolul principal a lui Kate Winslet, una dintre cele mai valoroase actrite ale zilelor noastre. Nu in ultimul rand,productia are 22 nominalizari la premiile Emmy ceea ce nu-i de colea. La ora 20.00 incep primele doua episoade si,ca de obicei, voi incerca sa scriu despre ceea ce vad fara sa povestesc actiunea pentru a nu rapi bucuria vizionarii. Astept parerile voastre!

ATENTIE! POATE CONTINE SPOILERE!

In primul episod al miniseriei plonjam in America anului 1931,an din perioada Marii Depresiuni. Marea Depresiune a durat la nivel mondial din 1929 pana in 1939. A fost cea mai indelungata si severa depresiune economica prin care a trecut societatea industrializata occidentala. S-a incheiat, cum stim, cu al doilea razboi mondial asa ca,tinand cont de ce se intampla in zilele noastre,avem toate motivele sa ne temem... Aceasta este societatea in care Mildred se zbate sa-si creasca in conditii cat mai bune cele doua fetite, Veda si Ray, cu care a ramas pe cap dupa ce a fost parasita de un barbat prea putin responsabil. E greu,e foarte greu,trebuie sa faca multe compromisuri dar e hotarata sa-si pastreze,pe cat posibil,respectul fata de sine...

In al doilea episod al miniseriei constatam ca, dupa mai multe incercari nereusite, Mildred a inceput sa-si gaseasca un drum al ei, un drum care sa-i asigure o viata cat de cat linistita si prospera. Barbatii din viata ei par sa-i fie de ajutor, nu mai e Bert dar bunul amic(si chiar mai mult decat atat) Wally ii ofera o solutie foarte buna. Pare sa apara si dragostea mult cautata in persoana atragatorului Monty dar,spre final de episod,soarta ii rezerva lui Mildred o lovitura naucitoare.

In al treilea episod aflam cum se poate deschide o afacere infloritoare in vremuri de criza economica profunda: trebuie munca foarte multa,dar iti trebuie si parteneri puternici si prieteni priceputi care sa-ti furnizeze solutiile necesare atunci cand lucrurile nu merg in directia dorita. E insa intotdeauna greu sa mentii echilibrul in astfel de situatii,mai ales cand ai o relatie cu un "atarnator" iar propria fiica,pe care o iubesti ca pe ochii din cap, nu stie sa-ti aprecieze eforturile.

In al patrulea episod conflictul dintre mama si fiica ajunge la apogeu si e firesc sa fie asa,au mai trecut patru ani si Veda, care de mica credea ca le stie pe toate, a devenit o adolescenta insuportabila care nu se da in laturi de la nimic pentru a-si satisface ambitiile. Cam asta e modelul promovat in societatea capitalista in general si in cea americana in special: sentimentele sunt un balast, e important sa reusesti indiferent de mijloace. Spre final Mildred are parte de o surpriza placuta dar amaraciunea celei care isi dorise, mai presus de toate, o familie functionala nu poate fi stapanita.

Impresionanta poveste a unei femei care s-a luptat cu criza profunda a societatii americane din anii '30 a ajuns la final. Mildred face tot posibilul in razboiul continuu pe care-l poarta cu soarta insa destinul sau este implacabil. In final e nevoita sa accepte ca,orice ar face, nu-i poate schimba pe cei din jurul ei.

Mildred Pierce is a classic postwar film noir with elements of the melodrama or "weeper"; it was structured as a typical murder mystery told in flashbacks. The family melodrama was significantly modified from its original source because of pressures from the Motion Picture Production Code regarding its sordid nature, specifically the behavior of the dissolute playboy character, Monty, who initiates a quasi-incestuous romance with his stepdaughter, Veda. At the same time, however, the screenwriters made violence much more central to the plot than it was in Cain's novel.
Hungarian-born director Michael Curtiz had already directed films of many different genres, including The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), Angels with Dirty Faces (1938), Dodge City (1939), The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (1939), The Sea Hawk (1940), Casablanca (1942), Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942), and This is the Army (1943). Curtiz reluctantly began filming with Crawford, who had a reputation for being mannered and difficult, but he was pleasantly surprised by her performance. The role was always considered for Crawford, but at certain stages also for Ann Sheridan.
This film was a tremendous box-office hit and critical success, and was adapted by Ranald MacDougall, Catherine Turney, and William Faulkner from Cain's novel. [Cain wrote novellas that provided source material for two other film-noir classics: his novella The Postman Always Rings Twice (1934), filmed in 1946, and the novella, Double Indemnity (1936), filmed in 1944.] Atypical of films noir, the protagonist in the film is female, but she is conventionally brought down by a femme fatale, in this case, her own daughter. Successful promotional copy for the film read: "Mildred Pierce – don't ever tell anyone what she did."
The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress (Eve Arden and Ann Blyth, both with their only career nominations), Best Screenplay (Ranald MacDougall), and Best Black-and-white Cinematography (Ernest Haller, who shared the Color Cinematography Oscar for Gone with the Wind (1939). Crawford won the film's sole Academy Award as Best Actress. It was her sole win out of three career nominations.
