Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World / Master and Commander: La capãtul pãmântului a avut onoarea de a fi singurul film realizat în insulele Galapagos. Acestea abundã în specii de plante si animale unice, printre care faimoasa testoasã giganticã, acum pe cale de disparitie. Naturalistul englez Charles Darwin a vizitat si el insula în anul 1835, descoperind aici bazele teoriei sale evolutioniste.

Insulele Galapagos sunt singurele zone de uscat pe care pune piciorul echipajul HMS Surprise. Dr. Stephen Maturin, care este totodatã si naturalist, este cel care a insistat sã se opreascã aici, pentru a studia flora si fauna. Scenele filmate aici sunt extrem de importante pentru regizorul Peter Weir, el dorind ca Galapagos sã arate „aproape ca o altã planetã pentru echipajul navei engleze.” precizeazã Robert Stromberg, specialist în efecte speciale la Digital Backlot.
