Scriitorul american Lyman Frank Baum s-a născut la 15 mai 1856, in Chittenango, New York, S.U.A. De la nașterea suferea de o boala de inima si a fost crescut la o ferma din Syracuse, New York.
In 1868 a fost înscris la Academia Militară Peekskill, a fost retras dupa 2 ani. Tatal sau era un prosper om de afaceri si la 14 ani i-a cumparat o tipografie. A inceput sa editeze propria revista, The Roselawn Home Journal, apoi The Empire si The Stamp Collector. S-a orientat apoi spre cresterea pasarilor de curte si a publicat revista The Poultry Record.
Aproape de vârsta majoratului a devenit interesat de teatru si a jucat Hamlet la teatrul deținut de tatăl sau, in 1881 avea loc premiera spectacolului muzical Maid of Arran, cu libretul si muzica scrise de el, care a impresionat criticii.
S-a casatorit in 1882 cu Maud Gage si a avut 4 copii. In 1883 il găsim administrând propria firmă, Baum Castorine, in 1897 a fondat publicația The Aberdeen Saturday Pioneer.
A debutat ca romancier in 1897, cu cartea pentru copii Mother Goose, apoi a scris peste 60 de carti, cele mai multe adresate celor mici. In 1899 apăreau The Navy Alphabet, The Army Alphabet , The Songs of Father Goose. Adevaratul succes il cunoștea insa in 1900, când publica Wonderful Wizard of Oz, ilustrata de W.W. Denslow, cea mai bine vanduta carte pentru copii timp de 2 ani. A adaptat povestea Vrajitorului din Oz pentru scena, impreuna cu regizorul Julian Mitchell, si au realizat pe Broadway un spectacol muzical care timp de 9 ani a fost prezent in turnee. In 1901 a publicat Dot and Tot of Merryland, cu pseudonimul Edith Van Dyne a publicat 24 de cărți pentru fete, in seria numita Aunt Jane's Nieces, cu pseudonimul Floyd Akers a publicat 6 cărți pentru băieți. In seria de cărți despre tărâmul din Oz a mai scris : The Marvelous Land of Oz (1904), Queer Vizitatorii din landul Minunatele din Oz (1905, benzi desenate), Ozma of Oz (1907), Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz (1908), The Road to Oz (1909) The Emerald City of Oz (1910), Patchwork Girl of Oz (1913), Little Wizard Stories of Oz (1913), Tik-Tok of Oz (1914), The Scarecrow of Oz (1915), Rinkitink in Oz (1916), The Lost Princess of Oz (1917), The Tin Woodman of Oz (1918). Postum au apărut The Magic of Oz (1919), Glinda of Oz (1920, The Royal Book of Oz (1921).
A creat Oz Film Manufacturing Company, si a regizat si produs el insusi His Majesty, the Scarecrow of Oz, The Last Egyptian. Printre ecranizările ulterioare celebre se număra filmul mut din 1925 in care juca Oliver Hardy, filmul muzical produs in 1939 de MGM, in care a jucat Judy Garland.
L. Frank Baum a murit la 06 mai 1919, la Hollywood, California.
