In anul in care a implinit cei 23 de ani, a fost implicat intr-un accident grav de masina, aceasta in timp ce se afla impreuna cu logodnica sa, Jennifer Grey, intr-o calatorie in Irlanda.
Acest eveniment a facut ca filmul Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) in care juca Mathew, sa urce rapid in box office-ul incasarilor.
In prezent este casatorit cu Sarah Jessica Parker si au impreuna un copil.
