- Pissarro: Father of Impressionism
Without Camille Pissarro, there is no Impressionist movement. He is rightfully known as the father of Impressionism. It was a dramatic path that Pissarro followed, and throughout it all he wrote extensively to his family. It is through these intimate and revealing letters that this gripping film reveals Pissarro’s life and work. Born in the West Indies, Pissarro found his passion in paint as a young man in Paris, and by the age of 43 had corralled a group of enthusiastic artists into a new collective. Their first show was scorned by the critics, but the group had acquired a new name: the Impressionists. For the next 40 years Pissarro was the driving force behind what has today become the world’s favourite artistic movement. The Ashmolean Museum has a long tradition of excellence. - Camille Pissarro
The man with the long greying beard who we find in this self-portrait is the painter Camille Pissarro (1830-1903). A keen follower of the Impressionist movement, the artist specialised in landscapes around Paris, often painted in winter, such as the “Chestnut Tress at Louveciennes” or the urban landscapes of Montmartre. Towards the end of his life, his painting technique changed and he turned towards Neo-Impressionism, for example in the “Seine River and Louvre Palace”. Enjoy your visit!

The Musée de Picardie in Amiens is a prototype. It is the first museum built as such in France. But its construction was not easy. The Museum was initially intended to be a "Petit Louvre", a palace. Snake, cetacean, prominent vein, river. Seen from the air, the structure that criss-crosses Mediacity, Liège's major new shopping complex, looks like a giant stained-glass window. This astonishing artery, which swells, curves and meanders over 350 meters in length, is a covered street, the main gallery of a huge shopping center built in 2009 to revitalize a former industrial district in disrepair. The image of the wealthy merchant from Lucca Giovanni Arnolfini shown together with his wife in the intimacy of their comfortable home in Bruges has always been considered the brilliant figurative proof of the commercial and artistic relations between Italy and Flanders in the 15th century. However, there has been a certain amount of doubtful attention devoted to the figures for some time; in fact, the hypothesis that one of the maximum masterpieces of portraiture of all times may not depict the Arnolfinis at all, but the van Eycks, is not entirely new. It had already been cautiously suggested by the Director of London’s National Gallery over a century and a half ago, when the painting was purchased by the great museum, but the idea was soon cast aside by the objections of specialists. For us today the Montefeltro Altarpiece, preserved in the Brera Art Gallery in Milan, is the “Altarpiece by Piero” par excellence. It is surprising to learn however, that until the late 1800s no one would ever have dreamed of attributing this impressive masterpiece to the hand of Piero della Francesca. For long centuries it was a deeply-rooted belief that the painter of the work was a certain Bartolomeo Corradini, a friar-painter known by the funny nickname of Fra Carnevale. It is in this guise that the Montefeltro Altarpiece came to Brera in 1811 and all the catalogues of the Milan Art Gallery repeated Fra Carnevale’s name until the end of that century. Piero della Francesca was simply forgotten... His name and his works ended up literally in the dust of oblivion until they disappeared from the horizon of history... His critical resurrection happened however, in the early 1900s, the century in which the Master painter wielded a powerful influence on the art of the first decades…

On the night of 17–18 October 1984, three criminals broke into the municipal museum in Semur-en-Auxois, which was not fitted with an alarm system. The joint investigation by the French and Japanese police revealed links between the Parisian underworld and the Japanese Yakuza mafia. Indeed, Shinchi Fujikuma, a Japanese gangster, had met two members of the Aubervilliers gang, Philippe-Emile Jamin and Youssef Khimoun, whilst serving time in a French prison. In 1987, the French managed to return from Japan with four of the five stolen paintings. The last one, *The Portrait of Mrs Baudot*, remained with its new owner, in accordance with the principle of ‘good faith’ guaranteed by Japanese law.

For us today the Montefeltro Altarpiece, preserved in the Brera Art Gallery in Milan, is the “Altarpiece by Piero” par excellence. It is surprising to learn however, that until the late 1800s no one would ever have dreamed of attributing this impressive masterpiece to the hand of Piero della Francesca. For long centuries it was a deeply-rooted belief that the painter of the work was a certain Bartolomeo Corradini, a friar-painter known by the funny nickname of Fra Carnevale. It is in this guise that the Montefeltro Altarpiece came to Brera in 1811 and all the catalogues of the Milan Art Gallery repeated Fra Carnevale’s name until the end of that century. Piero della Francesca was simply forgotten... His name and his works ended up literally in the dust of oblivion until they disappeared from the horizon of history... His critical resurrection happened however, in the early 1900s, the century in which the Master painter wielded a powerful influence on the art of the first decades…

The image of the wealthy merchant from Lucca Giovanni Arnolfini shown together with his wife in the intimacy of their comfortable home in Bruges has always been considered the brilliant figurative proof of the commercial and artistic relations between Italy and Flanders in the 15th century. However, there has been a certain amount of doubtful attention devoted to the figures for some time; in fact, the hypothesis that one of the maximum masterpieces of portraiture of all times may not depict the Arnolfinis at all, but the van Eycks, is not entirely new. It had already been cautiously suggested by the Director of London’s National Gallery over a century and a half ago, when the painting was purchased by the great museum, but the idea was soon cast aside by the objections of specialists. Jean Prouvé dreamed of creating homes as beautiful and rational as airplanes or automobiles. In 1953, at a time when he was going through the worst crisis of his life, he built his own house. Created in a hurry, out of bricks and mortar, it embodied his most innovative ideas. In a France where concrete was king, Prouvé was a man of metal, first folded sheet metal, then aluminum. From the 1930s onwards, he tried to rationalize the design of his buildings, dreaming of a housing industry that would build houses with the same precision with which cars and planes are built. This is what he calls "putting architecture back where it belongs". He is designing several models of low-cost, do-it-yourself kit homes, ready for mass production. Intelligent, functional and necessarily beautiful. On the night of 17–18 October 1984, three criminals broke into the municipal museum in Semur-en-Auxois, which was not fitted with an alarm system. The joint investigation by the French and Japanese police revealed links between the Parisian underworld and the Japanese Yakuza mafia. Indeed, Shinchi Fujikuma, a Japanese gangster, had met two members of the Aubervilliers gang, Philippe-Emile Jamin and Youssef Khimoun, whilst serving time in a French prison. In 1987, the French managed to return from Japan with four of the five stolen paintings. The last one, *The Portrait of Mrs Baudot*, remained with its new owner, in accordance with the principle of ‘good faith’ guaranteed by Japanese law.

There is great simplicity and troubling realism in the figures of Georges de La Tour (1593-1652). Influenced by Caravaggio’s works, he painted with light tones as in his famous “Cardsharp with the Ace of Clubs”. His works also include several nocturnal scenes with striking chiaroscuro, simply lit up by the flame of a candle as in “Newborn” and “Adoration of the Shepherds”, which are at present conserved at the Louvre Museum. In the late 18th century (between 1775 and 1779), Claude Nicolas Ledoux built a monumental factory for the King of France in Franche-Comté. A revolution in architecture, a decade before the full-blown Revolution. Ledoux wanted to reinvent architecture, just as Rousseau wanted to reinvent the Social Contract, by returning to the sources, to "natural principles". It was both an aesthetic revolution, an innovative industrial site and the nucleus of an ideal city that would never see the light of day.

- The Male Nude
During the Renaissance the male body was portrayed less frequently than its female counterpart. With the advent of studies at the French Academy in Rome, the male nude became, on the contrary, the most important exercise for the student painter, to the point where a work portraying a naked man became known as “Academy Study”. Look at the figure in “Charon Ferrying the Shades” by Subleyras or the “Male Nude or Hector” by David.
