Architectures - Jean Prouvé's house
Jean Prouvé dreamed of creating homes as beautiful and rational as airplanes or automobiles. In 1953, at a time when he was going through the worst crisis of his life, he built his own house. Created in a hurry, out of bricks and mortar, it embodied his most innovative ideas. In a France where concrete was king, Prouvé was a man of metal, first folded sheet metal, then aluminum. From the 1930s onwards, he tried to rationalize the design of his buildings, dreaming of a housing industry that would build houses with the same precision with which cars and planes are built. This is what he calls "putting architecture back where it belongs". He is designing several models of low-cost, do-it-yourself kit homes, ready for mass production. Intelligent, functional and necessarily beautiful. The house he built for himself and his family in the heights of Nancy in the space of a few weeks in the summer of 1953, under dramatic circumstances, is a particularly moving embodiment of the designs and

Two years later, in a town hall in the Paris suburbs, it stood proudly on the staircase: ‘Do you realise you’ve got a Picasso in your building?’ exclaimed an antique dealer who had come to visit the château. - Five Paintings by Corot – France
On the night of 17–18 October 1984, three criminals broke into the municipal museum in Semur-en-Auxois, which was not fitted with an alarm system. The joint investigation by the French and Japanese police revealed links between the Parisian underworld and the Japanese Yakuza mafia. Indeed, Shinchi Fujikuma, a Japanese gangster, had met two members of the Aubervilliers gang, Philippe-Emile Jamin and Youssef Khimoun, whilst serving time in a French prison. In 1987, the French managed to return from Japan with four of the five stolen paintings. The last one, *The Portrait of Mrs Baudot*, remained with its new owner, in accordance with the principle of ‘good faith’ guaranteed by Japanese law.

On the evening of 13 July 1999, a day of celebrations in France, Rembrandt’s "The Boy with a Soap Bubble" disappeared from the Draguignan Municipal Museum. Patrick Vialaneix recounts how he fell in love with this painting at the age of 13. Thirteen years later, the painting continued to haunt him, and he decided to steal it so that he could always have it close to him and talk to it. He therefore hid in a cupboard in the museum, waiting for nightfall to make off with it. He turned himself in to the police in 2014.

- Alley of Poplars by Sisley, Nice Museum of Fine Arts
Sisley was a British Impressionist painter, closely associated with Renoir and Monet. On 20 June 1978, at 8.30 pm, a truck was stolen. Inside were around ten masterpieces worth 1.5 billion francs. The transport company responsible for returning the works following a loan had made no security arrangements. On 21 September 1998, ‘The Avenue of Poplars’ was stolen once again. This time, it was the curator of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nice, Jean Fornéris, who staged his own abduction! Finally, on Sunday 5 August 2007, five masked and armed men held up staff at the Nice museum to steal four paintings, including the Sisley. It was not until 2008, with the help of the FBI – which was also searching for works stolen from the Boston Museum – that the thieves were arrested.

Federico Gentili di Giuseppe was a Jewish businessman of Italian origin with a passion for art. On his death in 1940, he bequeathed a collection of 150 paintings to his two children, Marcel and Adriana, who had become naturalised French citizens. In 1941, Maître Moulin auctioned off these paintings under questionable circumstances. This marked the beginning of a legal battle waged by the Gentili di Giuseppe heirs, which was to last nearly 50 years.

On the night of 17–18 October 1984, three criminals broke into the municipal museum in Semur-en-Auxois, which was not fitted with an alarm system. The joint investigation by the French and Japanese police revealed links between the Parisian underworld and the Japanese Yakuza mafia. Indeed, Shinchi Fujikuma, a Japanese gangster, had met two members of the Aubervilliers gang, Philippe-Emile Jamin and Youssef Khimoun, whilst serving time in a French prison. In 1987, the French managed to return from Japan with four of the five stolen paintings. The last one, *The Portrait of Mrs Baudot*, remained with its new owner, in accordance with the principle of ‘good faith’ guaranteed by Japanese law.

On the evening of 13 July 1999, a day of celebrations in France, Rembrandt’s "The Boy with a Soap Bubble" disappeared from the Draguignan Municipal Museum. Patrick Vialaneix recounts how he fell in love with this painting at the age of 13. Thirteen years later, the painting continued to haunt him, and he decided to steal it so that he could always have it close to him and talk to it. He therefore hid in a cupboard in the museum, waiting for nightfall to make off with it. He turned himself in to the police in 2014.

Federico Gentili di Giuseppe was a Jewish businessman of Italian origin with a passion for art. On his death in 1940, he bequeathed a collection of 150 paintings to his two children, Marcel and Adriana, who had become naturalised French citizens. In 1941, Maître Moulin auctioned off these paintings under questionable circumstances. This marked the beginning of a legal battle waged by the Gentili di Giuseppe heirs, which was to last nearly 50 years.

Vandalised, stolen, cut into pieces, melted down and resold for a few thousand euros, even though they are worth millions: sculptures. On the night of 30–31 March 1999, whilst this park in the 6th arrondissement was closed to the public, individuals stole the sculpture of Picasso’s former muse and lover, Dora Maar: ‘Head of a Woman’, an 80-centimetre-tall bronze weighing 80 kilos. Two years later, in a town hall in the Paris suburbs, it stood proudly on the staircase: ‘Do you realise you’ve got a Picasso in your building?’ exclaimed an antique dealer who had come to visit the château. Indeed, the town hall had found a ‘large stone’ buried on a plot of land, had it cleaned, thought it was beautiful and displayed it in their château, unaware that it was a sculpture by Picasso…

On the evening of 13 July 1999, a day of celebrations in France, Rembrandt’s "The Boy with a Soap Bubble" disappeared from the Draguignan Municipal Museum. Patrick Vialaneix recounts how he fell in love with this painting at the age of 13. Thirteen years later, the painting continued to haunt him, and he decided to steal it so that he could always have it close to him and talk to it. He therefore hid in a cupboard in the museum, waiting for nightfall to make off with it. He turned himself in to the police in 2014.

The Sainte-Geneviève library is a milestone in the history of architecture and libraries. As the first university library open to all, it was with this building that the concept of the public library was born. Breaking with the neo-classical trend that dominated Europe in the mid-19th century, Henri Labrouste erected a compact, uncluttered building in the heart of the Latin Quarter in Paris. It combines stone and an industrial material, iron, previously reserved for bridges and railway stations. Here, it is displayed and magnified in the large reading room. This approach astounded Labrouste's contemporaries, and was hailed by Le Corbusier as the first step towards "modern architecture".

The camera is fantastic museum piece in the safekeeping of Leiden University. It turns out to be a complicated chemical process with glass negatives and slow shutter speeds. In the aftermath of the First World War, the parish priest of Raincy decided to build a new church. But the country was ruined and the clergy's coffers were empty. One man rose to the double challenge of urgency and budget: architect Auguste Perret. At the time, building quickly and cheaply meant using reinforced concrete. An unloved and shameful material, reserved for industrial works. It took only 13 months to build this "Sainte chapelle du béton", a magnificent demonstration of the plastic and constructive qualities of this material, and a great lesson from a once-forgotten architect who revolutionized architectural language.

Reputed to be the inventor of oil painting, the Flemish painter Jan van Eyck (1390-1441) is a major 15th century artist. He is considered to be the founder of western portraiture and practised this art meticulously. Look closely at the famous “Arnolfini Portrait” exposed at the National Gallery, where the circular mirror at the back of the room shows the artist’s reflection, or the beautiful “Virgin of Chancellor Rolin” exposed at the Louvre, a picture in which three arches open onto a river landscape. Architectures - Igualada Cemetery
What to do with our dead? Burn them? Bury them? Make them disappear? Keep them within easy reach? We're 70km from Barcelona, behind Montserrat. Here, as all over Spain, we don't bury the dead, we pile them up in niches and superimposed vaults. The new Igualada cemetery, for example, will be the work of two Catalan architects at the very start of their careers, Enric Miralles and Carme Pinos. The project is surprising because it blends into the landscape. The land is hollowed out, inhabited by strange alignments of oblique concrete walls, covered with earth and planted. Is it a building? Or rather a place? A place enriched by the very fact that it's not finished? A strong link between twentieth-century architecture and landscape, between Le Corbusier and Richard Long.

- Looting of the Gentili Di Giuseppe Collection
Federico Gentili di Giuseppe was a Jewish businessman of Italian origin with a passion for art. On his death in 1940, he bequeathed a collection of 150 paintings to his two children, Marcel and Adriana, who had become naturalised French citizens. In 1941, Maître Moulin auctioned off these paintings under questionable circumstances. This marked the beginning of a legal battle waged by the Gentili di Giuseppe heirs, which was to last nearly 50 years.

- Alley of Poplars by Sisley, Nice Museum of Fine Arts
Sisley was a British Impressionist painter, closely associated with Renoir and Monet. On 20 June 1978, at 8.30 pm, a truck was stolen. Inside were around ten masterpieces worth 1.5 billion francs. The transport company responsible for returning the works following a loan had made no security arrangements. On 21 September 1998, ‘The Avenue of Poplars’ was stolen once again. This time, it was the curator of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nice, Jean Fornéris, who staged his own abduction! Finally, on Sunday 5 August 2007, five masked and armed men held up staff at the Nice museum to steal four paintings, including the Sisley. It was not until 2008, with the help of the FBI – which was also searching for works stolen from the Boston Museum – that the thieves were arrested.
