Fellini was always pretty open about his lack of intellectual background. He read hardly any literature except what was in school and even many important films he neglected to see. (He started out as a caricaturist.) Any allusions to other artists in his films are usually what he picked up from the intellectuals surrounding him and these are treated tongue-in-cheek. In short, don't bother to look for Joyce in anything by Fellini; the most you are going to get may be a character (usually a pseudo-intellectual) mentioning him. Same thing for Proust, Rimbaud, etc., etc. Fellini probably never read them and was honest about it.
