At the very moment that the protagonist Dan Evans is putting Ben Wade onto the prison train, Wade's gang shoots the rancher-with-low-self-esteem to death. In a move that makes no sense, Ben Wade grabs a gun and murders every man of his gang, which has just rescued him. Then Ben Wade boards the prison train. Presumably, the rancher's rebellious young son gets to collect the $1,000 payment for putting Wade on the train, but it's unclear. The audience is left stunned.
