Spider-Man 2 opened Wednesday to a record $40.5 million, becoming not only the top Wednesday opening ever, but also the biggest opening day in movie history.
"We are off to a phenomenal start on what looks to be a magical six days for Spider-Man 2," said Jeff Blake, Vice Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and President of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution.
Sony Pictures Entertainment's Spider-Man 2 soared past the previous record Wednesday opening of $34.5 million, set in December by The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
Ticket sales also surpassed the previous debut record of $39.4 million that Spider-Man grossed in its first day in May, 2002. Spider-Man 2's record opening is even more impressive since the first film opened on a Friday.
Spider-Man 2 opened in the United States and Canada in 4,152 theaters, just 11 shy of the record 4,163 for Shrek 2. Spider-Man 2 opened on Wednesday morning at 12:01 a.m. playing in over 2,500 theaters at that time.
Though Spider-Man 2 opened to a bigger box office total than Spider-Man, factoring in rising admission prices over the last two years and having opened in 537 more theaters, the sequel sold a few hundred thousand fewer tickets than the first film.
With its amazing, record breaking Wednesday opening, Sony expects Spider-Man 2 to break several more box office records over the July 4th weekend. Among the records in its reach are the biggest single-day gross record and best five-day opening, both set by Shrek 2, and the best six-day opening, set by The Matrix Reloaded.
It is also likely that Spider-Man 2 could become the first movie to ever earn $50 million in one day, which would easily best Shrek 2's $44.8 million record.
